Boot Failure

Win2k+updates 2*hds 3 partitions on each, not raid,desktop config.
After a freeze pc booted to blue screen,stop error.
Ran recovery consul, chkdsk/r gets to 24% then hangs(45min) - should I have
left it overnight?
I am perplexed however that from the command prompt dir gives 'an error
occured during directory enumeration' on all drives?
IBM disk check utility shows either hd failure or unrecoverable errors on
boot drive.
I realise I am probably looking at hd failure but the dir msg,on all drives,
is perplexing.

Further;
chkdsk gives no errors whilst chkdsk/r finally gives unrecoverable errors.
Any other advise before I replace hd, and go through all the grief of
reinstalling?
