Boot Error

My wife's computer no longer boots. This was after downloading service pack
2 and rebooting as recommended. It now hangs at various locations and then
the System Recovery demands a password. Which we don't have, nor do we know
what it's asking for. So we can't even re-install the operating system.

Help?

If you are running XP Home Edition try leaving the password box blank.
