Boosting Audio Level over Max

When i listen to sound on my headphones the audio level, even with general
and wave settings on maximum, is too quiet for me. What can i do to boost the
audio level over max? Short of editing the sound file in an audio editor and
boosting it's level. I'm looking for the likes of tweaks, patches, third
party programs.

I tried google but i couldn't find anything.

Add an amplifier between your sound card and your headphones.
