Blue screen with please wait.

Frequently my Windows XP Pro on a Dell laptop will go to a blue screen with
"Please wait" and slowly lines of white dots appear. It takes several
minutes to finish, and then everything seems OK. Anyway there are no
problems that I know of. I also use Office 2003 Pro plus many other programs
which I start from the Launch bar as needed.

To avoid these delays, I just close the lid and let is stay in Sleep mode.

Can someone please refer me to where I can find information on what my
machine is trying to tell me?

Thanks.
Roger

Do you mean when you boot up? Are there dark blue bars at the top and bottom when this happens?

It sounds like your system is doing a check on the disks for data corruption. It shouldn't do that unless it did not shut down
properly last time. If it does this every time check this web page, it's got instructions on fixing it:

Many thanks, Alec.
Will check out the reference.
You are right, the bars are there.
Probably this was the wrong newsgroup for that question.

Actually this is the right group for it, and what you are seeing is the pre-boot screen where Windows performs routine maintenance
that cannot be done while Windows is running. Keep an eye out next time so see if it is talking about scanning a disk, in which
case the steps in that page will help you fix it. (It's possible for other actions do be done during the pre-boot phase, but other
than disk scanning, everything else is extremely rare.)
