Does Windows (XP) firewall block other than viruses and spyware?

Hi Barry,

Yes, Windows Firewall will block unsolicited connections to your computer,
be they malware or not. You can, however, configure the Firewall to allow
connections of your choosing. Perhaps you will find this MSKB article
helpful:

Windows Firewall may block some programs from communicating over the
Internet after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2

No. It does not specifically block either. It simply
manages which ports are or are not open and available
to the internet. That isn't the purpose of a firewall.
Try reading about firewall at Wikipedia.com.
