Block ads with Kerio?

D

Dennis James

I'm using AdBlock for Mozilla, and it works very nicely.
I'm also using Kerio 2.1.5. Can anyone one please advise
if it's possible for Kerio to filter out ads? Not sure if there's
any benefit to Kerio blocking ads rather than AdBlock?

If it's is possible, can someone please help me to
understand how to write such a new Kerio Filter Rule.

By the way, all the above freeware was discovered thanks
to all of you. Thank you all ! !

Technically no. Not unless you put in long list of ips to block which
correspond to adservers.

Well using a firewall to block ads, will have a system wide effect ,using
Adblock applies only to Firefox.

AdBlock only hides ads it doesn't not download them like Proxomitron(much better)

I think you're mistaken about this. Once I block an ad with Adblock, I no
longer see the "contacting/waiting for" dialog for that particular image.

I'd suggest taking an altogether different approach -- use a hosts file:

check the bandwidth used wiht/without adblock... should be the same...
I'm pretty sure(99.9%)

I'd suggest taking an altogether different approach -- use a hosts
file:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

A HOSTS file works great, but need constant maintenance. eDexter, in
conjunction with a HOSTS file, is what I use. A HOSTS file requires an
exact match on a URL, whereas eDexter will filter on partial matches.
For example, my *master* HOSTS file has 337 entries for doubleclick ad
servers, and I can eliminate all of these, and any future (without me
ever having to edit eDexter) doubleclick adservers with just one line in
eDexter - *doubleclick*, where * represents 'any string'. Also eDexter
places a tiny blank image on the web page rather than have the ugly
system 'PAGE CANNOT BE FOUND' image. I see virtually zero ads anywhere.

I guess that's because that image is already in your cache.

AdBlock does not prevent ads from downloading -- it just overlays
them. A future version should prevent downloading. From
<http://adblock.mozdev.org/>:

In Development

The latest dev-branch already includes:

* Blocking filtered-items before they load

* Listing all block-able items in a page

* One-click filtering of: applets, flash, embedded-media

* Hassle-free deinstall.

What do you base that on?, on my system the call to the add's are redirected to
localhost.

AdBlock does not prevent ads from downloading -- it just overlays
them. A future version should prevent downloading. From
<http://adblock.mozdev.org/>:

In Development

The latest dev-branch already includes:

* Blocking filtered-items before they load

* Listing all block-able items in a page

* One-click filtering of: applets, flash, embedded-media

* Hassle-free deinstall.

I need to correct myself, and the AdBlock team needs to update their
project page. From the AdBlock faq,
<http://adblock.mozdev.org/faq.html>:

# When is Adblock going to actually block ads -- not download
them?

Since v0.4, Adblock has blocked downloads.
