Bloat on my C: drive

Hi,

I run XP Pro, SP2, which I keep on my C: partition. I had about 4GB of free
space on that partition until today, when I have only about 120MB of free
space. I *have* added data to the partition, but not more than about half a
GB. I keep the system restore file limited to about half a GB and have only
a small paging file on C:, with the rest of the paging file on another
partition .

Can anyone suggest what the source of this bloat is? There's several free
GB that I could move from other partitions to C:, and I could compress C:,
but first I'd like to know what's going on.

Only you can look through your file system to find where the files are
located.

Not having your computer here, and not knowing what programs you have
installed and not knowing your computing habits - it is pretty hard to tell.

All I can tell you to do is to search your hard drive for them.

icon also to class up your desktop.

Of course as Richard says, only you can find what is hogging real estate but
I can tell you some frequent usual suspects:

1) System Restore: Slilde the slider back to about 1% on the tab on Sys
Properties dialogue box--"sysdm.cpl" in run box. What was the SR team in
Redmond thinking when they defaulted to 12%. It would be great to have one
of them step up to answer that some day.

2) Recyle Bin

3) The amount of memory you have allocated--again the advanced tab on System
Properties.

4) Delete the files (as many as you can) in the %temp% folder--also can help
install conditions--use safe mode to do it if you need.

Thanks, Shenan and Richard. I'll certainly follow your advice.

Since posting, I've noticed an odder symptom. I removed half a GB of data
from my C: partition, moving it to an external hard drive. But "My
computer" didn't show an increase in free space on my C: partition.

What could that mean?

It probably means that you have Norton something or other installed on your
computer. You have to empty the recycle bin - in two places when you right
click on it to do so. That will free up the space.

Here, for future reference, was the problem. I've been ripping CD's for my
new Rio mp3 player. What I didn't know was that Rio's program creates WAV
files in an obscure location while on the way to making the mp3 files. Also,
my son downloaded the world's largest mp3 while visiting over the weekend.

I can't believe how fast the problem's gone away once you guys got on it.

Doubtful, I've got a little over 70GB of MP3 right now, all tagged and
sorted, virtually all of it averaging 192Kb or higher.
