Somebody please help! My friends computer apparently has
the blaster virus. It has made it's way to keeping the
computer from staying on at all. It's a vicious cycle of
turning itself on and off without giving time to load
windows XP or anything. We can't get any kind of a screen.
We tried rebooting with the restore CD but it won't get
past the page that says "checking computer....". We have
called microsoft and Window people and they just keep
transfering us back and forth to each other acting like
they have no idea of what to do unless we pay them. I can
get rid of the virus if I can just get windows to load. Am
I too late....has the virus eaten the hard drive? Can
anyone help us? Please reply to email address with "blaster
virus info" as the subject. Thanks!

Those don't sound like symptoms of the Blaster virus. You've got something
else going on, possibly hardware related.

The blaster virus typically does not restart the computer until after it has
started Windows. You are saying that the machine in question reboots during
the boot process itself? If so, you may have a different issue, rather than
the blaster worm. A constantly rebooting computer (that never fully boots
in the first place) is something that can happen when software is
misconfigured.

Have you tried booting into "Safe Mode" by pressing the F8 key during the
initial boot up and then choosing "Safe Mode" from the resulting menu?

This doesn't sound at all like blaster to me.

Sorry, no. No E-mail support.

1. If your computer is rebooting repeatedly, while pc is
powered off disconnect from the Internet:
Broadband connection users: Locate the cable that runs
from your external DSL or cable modem to the wall and
unplug that cable either from the modem or from the
telephone jack.

Dial-up connection users: Locate the telephone cable that
runs from the modem inside your computer to your telephone
jack and unplug that cable either from the telephone jack
or from your computer.

2. Then turn on PC... once up Ctrl-Alt-Delete to taskmgr
and end msblast.exe process.

3. IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN IN REGEDIT AND DO NOT FEEL
COMFORTABLE MAKING REGISTRY CHANGES... DON'T!! FIND
SOMEONE WHO CAN DO IT FOR YOU!!

Go into regedit take edit menu option then take click on
find, type-in msblast.exe in the find what box, click find
next. Then delete JUST the msblast entry.
it should be located:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Run

exit regedit

2. Update Windows: install the security WindowsXP-KB823980-
x86-ENU.exe

You didn't read the original message. The machine does not completely boot
up so, your instructions can't be followed. This doesn't sound like the
Blaster worm anyway.

it seems to me like a Power Supply gone bad issue

Got the same problem since friday - just going round in
cirlces. I dont even get as far as the start screen -=
constantly rebooting - F8 does give options of Safe mode
and last good settings etc but selecting them doesnt make
any difference. Dont know what to do-any ideas welcome
thanks

Go to Start/ Run and type cmd

Once command prompt starts type in

shutdown/a

This will stop the shutdown.

Now go to www.symantec.com and navigate to the removal tools where you will
find a download to remove the blaster virus.
Once you have removed the virus you will have to run windows updates.

Did you even read the previous posts? He can't even get booted up. How
will he goto the Start menu?

If you don't know, then you may want to find someone who can help. And
before a complete re-format, you may want to try a repair install so you
have a shot at not losing all your data on the drive (which you will if you
do a format).

But in a nutshell:

Place your WindowsXP CD in your drive and boot the computer with the CD in
the drive.
Because the CD is "bootable", a menu will come up asking what you want to
to.
Follow the instructions for a "Repair" Installation.

How do you reformate the drive?

You know, I'm just popping into this post, but you might just want to
take the computer in to a good local computer repair shop (not a Best
Buy or CompUSA type of store) because you might have some failing
hardware. They can rescue your data if you need that, test your system,
reinstall Windows for you, etc.
