Hi All,

Our computer with Win XP has been infected by Blaster.
Unfortunately we can't use the procedure advised on the
Microsoft's pages because we can't install neither the patches
nor antivirus programme. Just after starting the installation
of the patch the form disappeared without any message.
We can't even click on "Next". The same happens during
installation of antivirus program.
Before the above mentioned installations we used the Fixblast.exe
and Fixsbigf.exe so now there are no worms in the system.
We tried to perform the installations whilst disconnecting from the
Internet because we had the programs on CD-R burnt under Windows 98.

Please help us and tell what we should do.

Regards
Mat

You need to start over and perform a "clean install":

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ** Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall **

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

Thank you very much for your prompt and detailed reply.
You need to start over and perform a "clean install":
I see that we don't have any way out now.

Do you think that the low format of the disk/all partitions is
not necessary?

We have 2 systems on our computer : Win 98 SE on the
partition C and Win XP HE on D. Both partitions are FAT.
Do you think that it can be enough delete the partition D only,
format it and install Win XP from scratch, remaining Win 98
on C intact? Or rather we should begin everything from scratch?

Mat
