Blank Screen

We have been trying to set up WinXP Home on our computer. All we get is a
blank screen with a blinking curser at the top left hand corner of the
screen. We can not get to anything; CMOS etc... When we disconnected
everything except the mouse, keyboard and the monitor, we got to a point
where we could press F1 to get to the Bios. And that is about it.

The computer is a HP Pavilion. We put in a 80Gb hard drive and a new CD RW.
The computer is about four years old. Can anyone help us?

First off.. Did you set the jumpers on the new devices correctly?
Second.. Does the BIOS see the new devices?
