Blank document

When opening a blank document in word 2007 a document I had previously saved
opens instead of a blank page. So I have to erase the document before I can
get a blank page. I have deleted the original document but is has not changed
anything. I am assuming I may have saved it in a different format?? But I
don't know how to change it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
