Blank desktop in Windows XP - help!

Hi, please can someone help me urgently. This hasn't happened before. I did
some regular spyware checking, and rebooted to complete the removal of
spyware, and ever since I have been getting a blank desktop in Windows XP,
with no icons, nothing, just an error message saying 'Windows Explorer cannot
open' and asking if I want to send a report.

By sending a report I was able to make a Net connection and get my browser
to open, but that's all. I can't run any programs, I can't do anything else.
I can access files through my browser, but I don't think I can run anything.

This has never happened before, and I had no warning. I've never had a major
XP problem before either. This was just one of many reboots, and all of a
sudden I get the blank desktop. Help, please! I don't know where to look for
assistance.

My email address is (e-mail address removed).

I will be eternally grateful for help. I will reboot the machine again and
tell you the exact error message.

Thanks.
David

David, on next Startup Tap F8 repeatedly until you get a Menu. Select
Safe Mode. If WinXP boots into SafeMode
go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. Try
a Restore. Just follow the Instructions.

Hi again, the error messages are:

InPageError P1: c000009c P2: 00000003

and the files mentioned are from the temp file in my local settings:

\Temp\WER92f6.dir00\explorer.exe.mdmp

and in the same folder appcompat.txt

I'd run chkdsk if I could, but with a blank desktop I don't know how to run
any program! Help!
