windows starts up, i log in, and then i go to background

manager. tried to fix this problem with the solution
listed in 256194 (renaming shdocvw.dll) but that doesn't
work either. is there something i'm missing here??? fyi,
i can get to the affected computer from the network.

This may sound odd, but try booting up into Safe Mode first, and then let it
go back into normal mode. Sometimes a file update operation cannot be
completed after an update, and booting into Safe Mode allows it to finish
what is was trying to do. I have mainly seen the blank desktop problem after
a failed Internet Explorer update.
