Had a bunch of virus trouble so I just loaded Panda AntiVirus Titanium 2005.
On a reboot my power supply pooped out. When I replaced it and rebooted, I
got the windows startup splash screens and msg that windows was loading but
when it appeared to be loaded all I got was a black screen.

Furthermore, prior to going black I got a warning message saying:
Explorer.exe unable to locate component. The application failed to start
because SHDOCVW.DLL was not found. Reinstalling the application may.....

I finally figured out that windows was indeed running but there was no
desktop or office tool bar, just the black screen. Discovered that CntAltDel
would get me task manager and I was able to get a new office tool bar to show
(although it was a dup of one already running). I can run some progs from the
tool bar and they show up.

I ran the scv/scannow (or whatever) utility to no avail. I also tried to
reinstall xp entirely but it always hangs for some reason. Tried to find the
add/remove programs exe to get rid of Panda temporaraly but can't seem to
find it.

Tried everything I know but still seeking a solution. Any ideas on real
problem or answers?

Thanks,

Bill

How did you run "Sfc /Scannow" if windows doesnt start....Try installing
xp cd,boot to xp cd,recovery,press enter for password,then type:CHKDSK C: /R
When its thru, type:EXIT You could let xp try to start,or after EXIT,start
tapping
the F8 key, then select safe mode with networking, enter as administrator, then
run Sfc /Scannow Or,if xp is corrupt beyond that,in recovery, type:DiskPart
In DiskPart delete the partition, create one, then press Esc key, then
type:EXIT
Reboot to xp cd,install xp,new copy.

Hi Kelly,

I failed to mention one of the main reasons I was fooling with the computer
in the first place is that it's the client on a lan with the computer I'm now
using to com with you the one dial-up is plugged into. The lan failed, and my
kid's couldn't connect using the subject computer.

Therefore I can't really use your link. Furthermore, the dell I'm writing on
must have a bad A:\ since it often asks to format the disk I insert and
seldom can I view any files I do manage to copy to floppy. So I can't access
the link here then copy to the other subject machine.

I did read andrews answer and I'll give it a try.

Hi Andrew,

You probabably read so many of these you miss a detail or two. I said I
believe windows is running behind the black screen. I can ctlAltDel to get
the task mgr and I don't know exactly how I did it but was able to get a dos
prompt in order to run that utility.

I'll try your fix now. If you don't hear from me it worked. Also I replied
to kelly and provided some more info if you have any other questions.

Start Task Manager, File - Run and type

explorer

then if that doesn't work type

appwiz.cpl
