Black screen problem with a ATI Radeon 9200 on a laptop

I have the same problem as many users experiencing black screen matter with a
Radeon video card. I see the boot and it works also in safe mode.
My laptop has a ATI Mobility Radeon 9200. Can Microsoft ask ATI tp make us
a proper driver to solve this issue ?

I had the same problem with an ATI Radeon X1300 PCI-E card. If you go to
ATI's site you can download their Beta driver files for your video card. When
installing the program chose "custom" and only install the beta driver files,
for some reason Vista and ATI's Catalyst files don't seem to work well
together.

I've had this happen once, so far. Using ATI 9700.

I just went into Personalize Appearance, right
click on your desktop and look for "Personalize".

Then "Visual Appearance". Look for
"Open Classic Appearance Properties" Click it.

In that box you will see "Windows Vista Aero",
click it so that the option "Apply" becomes available.

Click apply, and you'll see "Please Wait". Your
desktop shouldn't be black anymore. If that doesn't
work you may want to try "Windows Vista Basic".

Unfortunatelly, even this solution doesn't work because the Catalyst driver
executable tels me that it doesn't see any compatible equipment plugged.
Maybe is it beaucause I can only start my Vista in Safe Mode...

Thanks anyway.

Just disable the driver in safe mode, then log into regular mode and delete
the driver, then use the ATI catalyst installer, and it should work just fine

Maybe all this futility you are experiencing is because ATI does not support
your video card for Vista. From their own support page:

Product series supported:
Radeon® 9500, 9550, 9600, 9650, 9700, 9800, X300, X600, X700, X800, X850
Radeon® X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900 series
Mobility™ Radeon® 9550, 9600, 9700, 9800, X300, X600, X700, X800
Mobility™ Radeon® X1300, X1400, X1600, X1800
CrossFireâ„¢ Xpress 3200
Radeon® Xpress 200, 200M

There is no reference to the 9200 series listed.

Vista actually has a driver for the Mobility 9200 on disk. But to get to it
you have to update your driver, then click on search my computer, uncheck
searching for only compatible drivers, then search through the ATI list of
drivers. MS actually has 2 drivers for the 9200 and with my 9000 (also on
the computer), they worked well. But don't expect "glass".
