Bizzare outlook behavior

I have a 6-month-old HP laptop with Office and Outlook 2003 SP 2 installed. I
use Verizon DSL for my mail server. Originally, Outlook worked fine. However,
the following symptomsI now have the following symptoms.
1. When I try to send a new e-mail, I get the message "unable to send this
item."
2. When I reply or forward a message, it sometimes will go out, but other
times I get the same "unable to send this item" message.
3. If a close an unsent message and reply "yes" to the question about saving
the mesage to go to the draft folder, I get an "Operation failed" message.
However, I can still drag and drop messages to the Drafts folder.

To date, I have:
1. Changed over my firewall & antivirus/spam protection.
2. Uninstalled & reinstalled Outlook
3. Set up a new profile
4. Tried to send via an alternative e-mail server I can access.

All of these have not had any impact on the problem.

I am at a loss! Any help would be appreciated.

Check what happens when you try start > run > (type) outlook /safe. Now send
a mail.

That cures the problem. Is there a problem continuing to run it like this, or
is there something else I can do? In either case, thanks! This was driving me
crazy!
