BIZARRE successful update BUT where is file?

Hello. The question I have is "what happened to my
Windows 2000 Professional SP 4 file that was present in
the add/remove programs section after updating Windows AND
IE?". Let me explain in detail what I did:
My laptop has been using Windows 2000 Professional SP 3
and Internet Explorer 5.00.3700 successfully for a long
time BUT I decided it was time for me to update to WIN2K
Pro SP 4 and IE 6.0 SP1 last night 12:00am PST. By the
way, I did ALL updates using the "scan for updates"
function through Microsoft.com and updated from there.
The first thing I did was updated to Win2k Pro SP 4.
The process asked me something to the effect "would you
like to backup/archive your files (requires alot of disk
space) so that if you decided to delete Win2k SP 4 that it
will go to your previous setup?" I clicked on YES. I'd
figure that was the safe thing to do. Anyways, it took
about 1 hour (dial up) but the screen finally
read, "loaded successfully". Immediately, I restarted my
PC and everything loaded perfectly. The ONLY thing that
was different was that a small icon appeared in the lower
left hand side of my toolbar but when I attempted to open
the icon it did nothing. So I opened up its properties
and the sections were grayed out but it appeared to me not
a significant icon. So I tried to delete it BUT it didn't
allow me. So I left it because I'd figure maybe it had
something to do with the update. Meanwhile, I went to
add/remove programs section and where it USED to
read, "Windows 2000 Professional SP 3" now read, "Windows
2000 Professional SP 4". So I opened a few programs just
to test everything out and everything appeared fine. So I
went ahead and started the NEXT update.
The next thing I did was updated to IE 6.0 SP 1. This
process took about 1 hour too and at the end of the
updating process the screen also read, "loaded
successfully". So I restarted my PC and connected to the
internet SUCCESSFULLY. Oddly enough, when I restarted my
PC that little icon that appeared in my lower left hand
toolbar that I mentioned above was GONE but replaced with
and IE and Outlook Express icon. So I figured that
UNKNOWN icon was taken care of for me automatically by IE
I guess. Meanwhile, to check the IE version, I clicked on
Help>about Internet Explorer and it read IE 6.0.2800 SP
1. So I browsed a couple of pages to make sure everything
is working and so far so good. So I went to add/remove
programs section and it NOW read "Microsoft Internet
Explorer 6 SP 1". But STRANGELY enough while I was in
that section I noticed the "Windows 2000 Professional SP
4" was TOTALLY GONE. I scratched my head and restarted my
laptop and again the "Windows 2000 Professional SP 4" item
was STILL GONE in the add/remove programs section.
So the question as I asked in the beginning is "Where
did my Windows 2000 Professional SP 4" item in the
add/remove programs disappear to and why? I guess I
should be thankful that both updates went without a glitch
THUS far but I'm concerned if the IE update had anything
to do with the disappearing of the Win2k Pro SP 4 item.
Lastly, there is a "Winamp (remove only" item in the
add/removes programs section...maybe its name was
changed. Maybe it was that insignificant icon that
originally appeared in my lower left hand toolbar.
I'm not computer savvy so any suggestions/advice please
be basic. Thank you all in advance. Rochelle.

Most likely the IE6 update would need to be removed prior to removing SP4

Dave. So should I just leave everything "AS IS" since
everything is working FINE, but when I decide to update to
possibly Win2k Pro SP 5 in the future that I need to
remove the IE 6 updater? If so, HOW do I do that? Thank
you. By the way, is this normal? Rochelle.

No need to do anything. When SP5 is released, just install it. Yes
everything you're seeing is normal and expected behavior.

Dave. My last questions: 1) I won't do anything until SP5
is released, but when I do update to SP5 is it antipated
that the "window 2000 professional" item will REAPPEAR in
the add/remove section?, 2) If I would have updated IE
explorer FIRST then updated Windows 2k Pro SP5 SECOND,
would it have made a difference?
Again, thank you for all of your help. :) Rochelle.

* Yes, you should have the option to remove SP5

* The IE6 update most likely made use of components that were installed by
SP4, hence the dependency.

For what it's worth, I find that the same thing happened to me, or at
least I can confirm that after installing SP4 and subsequently IE6SP1
there is no entry in Add/Remove programs for SP4. The uninstall folder is
present and contains the expected files. I installed the two updates
several days apart and never thought to looks for the SP4 uninstall entry,
so I can't swear that it was there, but I expect it must have been.

My update process varied significantly from yours, so it would seem that
it's the order of the two updates that makes the difference. I installed
SP4 from an MS-produced CD, waited a few days, and then installed IE6SP1
over IE5.5SP2 using a downloaded full-install file that had been copied to
a CD. Windows Update wasn't involved at all.
