Bizarre behaviour clicking a link to email address

When I click on an email address link, whether in an email or on a web page,
rather than opening my email client, 50+ blank explorer windows open. This
occurs for all users on the computer except for one and is not dependent on
the default email client (Outlook, Outlook express or Thunderbird). If I
create a new user on the computer the same bizarre behaviour occurs.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and how to rectify the
situation?

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

Do the same for whatever anti-spyware applications that you have.

Ran full updated scans of McAfee AV, Spybot S&D, Adaware and Windows
Defender, cleaned one malware found. Problem still exists.

Looks like the problem is in the registry. The key HK_classes_root\mailto
is unreadable for the clients that cant use the mailto protocol. It seems
that the permissions on the key have gottem messed up.

MC,

Here are a few fixes.
-----
Repair from David Candy

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 sendmail | Click OK
-----

Send To Repair from Kelly

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 sendmail.dll
Go to Start/Run and type in: regsrv32 ole32
Go to Start/Run and type in: regsrv32 /i shell32

Wesley:
Thanks for your help, however your suggestions did not work. The problem
was not with sendmail but with the file type URL:mailto protocol. Sendmail
was working OK. I did a google search on URL:mailto protocol and came up
with the following reference to setting the default mail client on a per
user basis: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/permail.htm. Although it doesn't
seem to fix the problem with the mailto key in HK_CLASSES_ROOT, it provides
for a satisfactory workaround for the problem
Mike.

Right-click the key, and choose Permissions.
Give Read acess for that key to the users.

Thank you for your suggestions, but I found a workable solution by setting
the default mail client for the individual user as described in:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/permail.htm.
