Did it work at one time? Also, how did the contacts get into the Contacts
folder?

it did work at one time.
I have added the contacts manually, some of them have been imported from a
backup. Some are synced from a palm pilot hotsync (mostly not) and some
have been synced using share-o

If you manually modify something in the items where the birthday isn't on
the calendar, does it fix it?

don't know what that means, exactly.

i made changes in the contact file (changed the address and a email address)
and it made no difference in the birthdays and anniversary listing.

Are you using the default contacts folder and the default calendar to view
the birthdays?

Subfolders have no more special standing that folders elsewhere in the
hierarchy. You could have calendars X, Y, and Z as subflders of the main
calendar or as top-level folders along side of the main calendar and it
wouldn't make any difference. Making a subfolder of a main folder does not
impart any special handling for that folder.

so this means, that however the main contact folder is the only contact
folder that will generate birthdays and anniversaries?

Yes. Only the main folder.
