bios settings asus p3b-f

Hi There.
never needed to be in this n.gr. but hey, here I am, due to pc problems.
Hope I am adressing the right group.

Here is the problem
system is about 4 years old ( I know its an eternity)
configuration is as such:

motherb:asus p3b-f
cpu: pentium lll 6oo mhz
installed ram 128 mb dimm sdram 100 mhz
fasttrak raid card ultra ata/66 (in stripe mode)
2x quantum hd 13 gig each (coupled to one array of 25 gig or something)
flop drive
dvd drive
cd r/wr drive
soundcard DMX terratec
graphic card viper 770 APC 32mb

After a system crash (about a week ago)
I accidently reset the bios to default values. (stupid)

From that time, i cannot install windows properly, and by now i am almost
sure
that the problem needs to be solved in the mobo bios.

Fiddeling with all of the settings i have win 98 installed now but the fatal
exclusion blue screen keeps poppin up, pretty soon after booting the system.
The exact message is:

fatal exclusion in OE 0028:coo4e99a in vxd vcache (01) +ooooo19a

Does this ring a bell, anyone?
what bios settings are wrong ? where does my quest start?

I'd apreciate every help I can get.

And what caused the crash?

Reason for asking: related?

Well, an OE (14) error refers to, in the generic sense, a 'memory' problem.
Unfortunately, since just about everything operates through memory they can
cause things to 'look' like a memory problem.

The most common causes are: 1. BIOS memory settings too aggressive, 2.
display, or other driver, problem, 3. poor CPU cooling, 4. memory socket
dirty or memory poorly seated, and 5. memory really bad.

I've also heard of cases where electrical noise from the A.C. lines, or
EMI, caused Vcache OE faults.

i was doubling a third audio cd to disc with EAC
the system crashed and on screen was the text
protectionfailure by windows in vxnetbios

were in the bios would i find these settings,....

2.
display, or other driver, problem,

I have the correct drivers for monitor and card installed

3. poor CPU cooling,

The cpu fan has been performing bad lately but it is alright at the moment
Could the cpu be permanently damaged by overheating?

4. memory socket
dirty or memory poorly seated, and

remove and reinstal?

5. memory really bad.

Thanks a lot for trying to help me out!

Could have been caused by the same problem, whatever it is, that you're
having now. And while 'coincidences' can, and do, happen that sure sounds
related.

In one of the Advanced BIOS options items.

2.

How do you know it's 'alright at the moment'? Just because it's 'spinning',
to some degree, doesn't mean it's performing properly.
Could the cpu be permanently damaged by overheating?

No. The P-III has internal thermal protection and will shut itself down if
it gets too hot but often the system will crash due to, tada, protection
faults before then.

General rule of debugging is to fix known problems before proceeding to the
'unknown' ones. A problematic CPU HSF needs to be addressed before you can
rule it out as the culprit. In addition to either replacing or lubricating
the fan, check the heatsink for dirt and grime buildup.
