Bios No Good???

I have a P4P800 Deluxe, the bios ver read from the chip is 1005 (on a
sticker).
I also have a P4 2.8e Prescott processor. I have heard that this board will
not post with this CPU with anything less than ver 1014. So how to update my
Bios Chip. Havnt had any luck getting in Touch with Asus about a new bios
chip. Anyone got any ideas??

You don't need a new bios chip. The current chip on your board is software
upgradeable through a flash process. You need to download the latest bios
update and flash utility from the ASUS web site and upgrade your bios.

Yes I understand that but I was told that with the prescott CPU the machine
will not POST without newer bios, No POST then you dont get far enough to
flash the Bios !!

Hmm....yeah, I wasn't thinking when I posted that. How about a local
computer shop? Maybe they can temporarily install a CPU and flash the bios
for you for a small charge.....

You do NOT replace the BIOS chip. You do a software upgrade of the BIOS
using a download from the Asus site.

That's the easy way, but requires a CPU supported by the existing BIOS.

I have just built another PC using the P4 Prescott 2.80E with the
P4P800 Deluxe Wireless Edition, it booted up fine and I just used
a Win98 boot floppy with the 1016 Bios and the latest AFUSDOS to
upgrade the BIOS and it is running like a charm.
Just do it :)

Most Asus machines can be forced to POST if they have dip switches and
you turn off "jumerfree" and set the clock speed with the switches.

If this newer board has no dip switches at all, then you may be out of
luck, but I'd try it first. In many cases, if the CPU is not recognized
by the BIOS, the machine will still come up in a very conservative "fail
safe" mode, probably operating at less than half of normal speed, but
it's enough to get the flash done.
