binary firmware update won't open

i downloaded a firmware update for my d-link ethernet router. after saving
the download to my desktop i cannot open the file . i get the chose to run
window twice, and then the "windows cannot open this file type" window. is
there an easily accessible program to solve this. there must be as, i can't
see this being that rare of an occurance. i am hoping this firmware might
boost the connection speed up my 2nd system. it's internet speed is less than
half the speed of my top system, and about even with the 3rd older custom
system. the "can't open file type" alert makes an appearance on a too regular
of an occurance, i am, however, a download junkie. also if anyone could
recommend a XP home edition research/answer type of literature/documentation
available in an actual book i would be very gratefull for my good fortune and
wish joy upon them all. i have XP home ed. on all 3 systems and i am sure
i've received the alert on them all, but evenwith the diversity of the
additional software/programs of the 3, i have not been successfull at opening
any of the 3-4 types of files contained in the alerts.

I recently updated the firmware on one of my Linksys routers. The update
had an extension of .bin which is not a registered file type. I went back to
their site and downloaded the installer program. In my haste to download the
update, I initially missed the instructions to download the installer as
well.
