Is there a freeware newsgroup binaries 'grabber' available? I'm looking
for something like 'Grabit' but without the daily d/l limits.

Thanks

GrabIt doesn't have download limits.

It's your Usenet provider that has download limits -- daily Meg/Gig,
weekly, etc., etc. -- not the software, unless by chance your provider
has their own proprietary downloader / and/or manage their own Usenet
download service.

Here's an excellent site with all about Usenet newsreaders:
http://www.binaries4all.com/

Also definitely see this page, which has a very good comparison of
basic & advanced features of several freeware and shareware Usenet
binaries downloaders:

DL limits are usually imposed by your ISP....you can BUY extra DL
amounts from them or an independant server.

The comparison table is excellent. Thanks.

To resume: Among the 12 newsreaders there are 4 free and 1 adware.
Grabit: easy, for beginners
BNR2: moderately difficult, for advanced users
PowerGrab: easy, for beginners

adware:
123NewZ: moderately difficult, for advanced users

But what is a virtual newsgroup ?

Sorry, I meant a search limit (the Shemes search facility) which only
lets you search for a few items a day.

Otherwise, any other way to use Grabit (or similar) without this
restriction?

TIA

Sure...

1. Simply d/l the headers from whatever binary group(s) may interest you
and browse through them with GrabIt. You can also search for specific
items within a group with GrabIt.

2. Search at http://audiofind.com/ for whatever to find what group
something is in (if at all) then go to #1.

Most people "subscribe" to groups that interest them so that Grabit can
do incremental updates of them rather than d/l all headers. The latter
can take considerable time for groups with 100s of 1000s or millions of
posts.

You can also do free searches at www.newzbin.com, tho for a paltry few
cents a day, you will have full access to the NZB files, which you can
load into a reader that recognizes this format and bingo! you'll get
your file(s) with little muss or fuss [let's hope].

**NOTE: newzbin.com ONLY provides the NZB's for download, NOT the
posts/binaries themselves.

I've got a sub to newzbin.com which is like $3.85 per month or
something.

Newzbin retention is something like 75 days, possibly more, which
covers pretty much all Usenet providers' retention.
