Extremely Frustrated with XP

Please help....

I was being a cooperative little user obeying Norton Anti-
virus, which had detected adware that required safe mode
to remove, and used msconfig to select safe mode. I
restarted the computer. It refused to boot. I then
booted from the Gateway-ized XP cd. I selected the
option to repair XP. It copied all the files it chose
for the repair. When the computer restarted it went into
safe mode. XP setup does not run in safe mode. I have
since installed a second copy of XP on the same partition
on the same hard drive in an attempt to access a boot
file or something that would kick the original
installation out of safe mode to complete setup. The
second install works only in 640x480 resolution and is
very limited in its capabilities (i.e. - no network
access). I would much prefer leaving the adware on the
computer and having to click a thousand pop-ups every
time I use IE than having no computer at all. Can anyone
offer a suggestion?

1. Don't trust Norton.
2. What did you remove?
3. Uncheck /SafeBoot via msconfig.
4. That is what Safe Mode looks like.

1. I don't trust Norton. I saw the dll file for myself
and would have removed it manually if I could have.
Unfortunately I have been locked out of my computer for
over nine hours now.

2. I did not remove anything. I can't get into the
first install of XP.

3. There is no way to uncheck safeboot in the first
install that I can get to from the second install of XP.

4. Yeah, I've been in safe mode before. I'm not a
newbie. Probably know just enough to be dangerous,
however.

Can you explain how I can get setup to quit long enough
for me to uncheck safe mode in the first install?
Everytime I get into safe mode, setup restarts the
computer before I can do anything.

Here is another person misdirecting their anger at the wrong company. You
are upset with Windows XP (Microsoft) because Norton told you to do
something and it screwed up your system.

a. You should be pissed with Norton, for supplying bad instructions
b. You should be pissed with yourself, for not reading or not applying those
instructions correctly!

I never said anything about being pissed at anyone. I
had the situation under control until XP refused to boot
properly. Now that I think about it, I'm a little pissed
at you for chiming in with your worthless little bit of
wisdom. Thanks for the lack of help and true arrogance.

But XP refused to boot properly due to what NORTON told you to do. Contact
Norton and work with them!

You will agree that Norton is probably of no help. The
people that know XP probably will be of more wisdom as to
this problem. Norton instructed me to use msconfig to
enter safe mode. The issue has nothing to do with
Norton. The issue is getting out of safe mode so XP
setup can complete so I can return to normalcy. Norton
did not cause the hang between XP setup and XP safe
mode. XP is encountering conflicting commands in its
startup routine and I am trying to rsolve that issue.
Norton is no way involved in that since Norton did not
remove any files, Norton was not running at the time of
the startup, and Norton is not forcing XP into safe mode
even after XP has been instructed to start in normal mode.

If you can help me get XP setup to quit or to get XP to
start in normal mode so setup can complete, I would
sincerely appreciate your efforts.

I'm not here to criticize XP or Norton. I'm here to get
help.

When this happened to me I was able to enter MSconfig in safe mode and
change the boot options. It then worked for me. But, you may have eliminated
many important pieces of the system. You didn't state "what" Norton had you
do, so it's hard to tell you how to reverse the changes.

That being said, and this isn't going to help you now, I never try to do
anything like what you did without creating a current image of my system.
Then, "when" things get screwed up, I can go back to the way it was and try
a different route.

Just to chime in late, to the OP,
Why did you install a second copy of XP on the same drive,
to a second drive or partition, maybe, but to the same drive
will just confuse the registry.

You said you used a Gateway OEM XP CD, perhaps you should
contact Gateway.

My suggestion is to boot the CD again, select install,
delete the current partition and start over. Hope you have
backups. You can boot the CD to the recovery console and
copy files that you can't bear to lose.

Thanks to both of you for your words of wisdom. Sorry I
was a bit snippy to you, Richard.
