Ok, ive just got in and when i siwtch on my pc the WinXP
pro loading screen comes up, then about half-way through
the load a bluescreen message comes up:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down
to prevent damage to your computer

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error
screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears
again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is
properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask
your haqrdware or software manufacturer for any windows
updates you might need.

If problems contuinue, disable or remove any newly
installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory
options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use
safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your
computer, press F8 to select advanced Statup options, and
then select Safe Mode.

I have not installed anything new, except the X2 and Far
Cry demos on the latest PCZone demo discs, since the last
time I booted. I have disabled the caching (dont know what
shadowing is) and it still doesnt work. I have disable
everything that seems unnecessary and can be disabled -
still doesnt work. Getting into safe mode brings up the
same error, as does Last Known Good Configuration.

My system is AMD Athlon XP 1700+ on a Matsonic MS80E3 Mobo
(i think) It has a GeForce 3 Ti200 with detonator FX 53
(or whatever the latest is) and runs onboard AC'97 SIS
chipset sound with .

It worked fine this morning, I switched it off when I went
out, came back and its like this. I've not backed up for
ages, have important coursework and the like on the PC, so
cant just do a straight re-format. Im going to post this
on every forum Ive ever heard of to try and get a fix.
Thank you to anyone who even reads this

This is an indication of a bad hard drive. Open the computer case and check
the cables connecting the hard drive to see that they are securely in place.
If you still have the problem, try booting from the CD drive, with the XP CD
(you can cancel any action). If it boots OK from the CD you probably have a
bad hard drive.

Your problem is generally a bad or wrong cable, a controller issue or a
damaged file system.

The below link will take you to a Microsft support article which describes
your issue and the steps necessary to correct it.
