Bewildering number of DDR2 selections

My old Abit KT7A RAID server is beginning to crash more and more
frequently with unhandled IRQ exceptions, so it is time to replace it.

In trying to get the most bang for the buck, I'm attempting to find a CPU
+ RAM chip combination. The new motherboard's manual is careful to avoid
making any recommendations :(

I've looked at Crucial and g.skill web sites trying to understand DDR2
but all I get from Crucial is "trust us, we'll send the right stuff" and
from g.skill an out of date PDF describing their numbering scheme.

Where can I find
1) the particulars for a given RAM chip?
2) a good read regarding what the terminology is trying to impart?
3) reliable reviews, not some bozo's uneducated "IWFM" (or not)?
4) any other useful, factual information?

newegg lists 50 g.skill chips ranging in price from $50 to $500 but the
price seems to have little or nothing to do with the CAS latency or bus
speed or even capacity. The word "extreme" in the name doesn't seem to
have any meaning either...

I can't afford to make a mistake on this purchase (Xmas is coming...).

Have you considered e-mailing the mb maker or calling their support number
to get a recommendation? If you could at least supply this forum with the
name and model of the mb you've got your eye on it would be helpful.
