I got an email tonight inviting me to join alt.comp.freeware webring
Is this genuine because it had a virus with it?

Somebody named (e-mail address removed) posted something about such a webring:

<[email protected]>

but it looks legit.

An e-mail with a virus?, last time I checked, webrings were online,
not offline? (or is this one a special desktop version?, lol).

Simpleton login = if you receive an e-mail from someone you don't know
(with or without an attatchment) view the message in plain text mode
and scan the attatchment BEFORE opening it.

It didn't say I had been troubled by a virus. I was warning people in
this group that they might be sent one.
Why did I bother smartarse?

However you interpreted OP, Steve, you're way ahead of me. I am still
very much puzzling over this compelling idea:

"Is this genuine because it had a virus with it?"

Ah - semantics or is it pedantry?
I'm sure one of you will be smug enough to tell me

I'll start again.

I got an email last night inviting me to join alt.comp.freeware webring.
As it downloaded, Avast, my virus program, signalled that virus Win32swen
was detected. I instructed Avast to delete the said virus, which, to the
best of my knowledge, it did.

I informed the guy at the webring site that this happened, but he cannot
find a virus at his end! He says.
When he replied to me - the virus came with the reply.

I don't think I shall be joining the webring.

All I am saying is that if you get such an offer BEWARE OF THE VIRUS!

It was sent directly from a WebRing form manually entered so I highly doubt
it came from me. No one else complained of this so called virus. Check
your ISP.

You would say that wouldn't you?
Just don't send me any more then we'll both be happy.

Jim, I wasn't trying to be a "smart arse". However, if you've received
the Swen worm in an e-mail from this guy/gal, then it is likely it has
happened because they are infected (regardless of what they think).

The Swen worm is curious in it's distro methods, as it sends itself
using it's own built in SMTP engine. I'm not aware of anyone being
able to send it themselves *accidentaly* or without knowing about it
first.

More information on Swen and it's variants can be found below.

It might be a valid point. Is it possible that it is your mail server and
not the original sender who is infected? It is worth questioning your ISP
about it for the peace of mind. On the other hand, if you don't get it sent
to you again in the near future you might be right to be suspicious.

I've only had it twice recently.
Once in the original mail and then in the reply from him to my warning.
Very suspicious.
Incidentally this is the first time I have received this virus outside
it's usual microsoft/returned-mail format.

have you ever thought YOU might be infected ? it maybe trying to
infect email as it comes in ? like i said, i very highly doubt that
it init came from me as i used a form and manually entered your email
address. i emailed several ppl test emails thru the form and even
thru my email program and no one got a virus except you.

btw, didn't mean to offend you as i was attempting to provide a
service to acf.

He can't seem to explain why that he is the ONLY one getting these so called
viruses. Right now the webring expanded to 11 members as of this writing
and none of them complained about a virus.

I can't, but for sure it will be the last time I warn you lot about
anything.
