Better Conditional Formatting for A2K?

M

Mark Gifford

Hi

I have a number of fields on a continuous form which contain values
from 0-100. At the moment, using Conditional Formatting I can make a
value that's over 90 appear in a thick red font or whatever. Now I'd
like to have more control so that for example 1-10 appears very light
red, 10-20 a slightly darker shade etc up to 90-100 whcih will be a
very dark shade of red. There only seems to be 40 colours in the
palette used for Conditional Formatting, and obviously I'd need to
choose colours from a much larger selection than that if I'm to select
10 different reds. Is there any way of bypassing the palette and maybe
specifying the colours numerically or something? Hope I've explained
this clearly,

Thanks

Mark

I don't see a way, but even if you could I believe it would cause you
problems. If the application is used on more than one computer you'll be
dealing with multiple monitors, all of which (even if they're the same make
and model) will display the colors slightly differently. You'll probably
also be dealing with users using different color depth settings on their
computers. Next, you get into how well each user's eyes will distinguish
these minor color/shade changes. I would recommend sticking with changes
that are solidly noticeable.

Something like 10% of the male population has a red-green
color deficiency in their vision. As one of that 10%, I
will tell you that some web sites that have red font over
a gray, green, or textured background are often all but
unreadable, forcing me to override the colors just to be
able to read the words. More often I just skip the web
site, unless there is some compelling reason for me to be
there. Similarly, I have attempted to work with databases
that demand a degree of color perception I do not have.
Web site and database designers should be more aware of
this than they are. If the colors are to help you in some
way as you review the data, and if you are the only one
that needs to distinguish the subtle differences between
ten shades of red, that's up to you. If the color
variations demand some sort of choice or response from the
user, you are asking for trouble.

You cannot use CF with more than 3 preset conditions. THe only method I
have seen that would accomodate your request involves the use of 1 pixel
Bitmaps, one for each desired color, embedded as OLE objects. I think
the source is from Russia but a search on GoogleGroups should reveal the
location of the sample MDB.
