best way of copying hard drive to SSD?

Suppose I wish to replace a 500 GB hard disk with a 500 GB SSD.
Should I use the manufacturers data migration software, or can
I just use a workhorse like Clonezilla or Acronis?

I have no problem with clonezilla, but there is that issue of getting
the sectors aligned properly. That is what I would research. It may not
be possible to clone and have the sectors aligned properly since cloning
is based on how the hard drive layout.

I used ghost4linux and my sectors were not aligned properly. I had to
fix them after the cloning.

If your manufacturer has a tool, I'd consider it first since it will
deal with the sector alignment issue natively and may handle any
manufacturer specific details of the drive better than other options.

However, as long as you deal with sector alignments, there's really no
bad choice.

Just watch the 4K alignment issue!

Acronis is fine and provides more flexibility if you want to
change the partitioning etc too at the same time as the copy.

By "change the partitioning" do you mean "re-arrange the relative
positions and sizes of partitions when cloning an entire drive"?

Yes. In some situations some want to do stuff like that as well.
In the past, I've just cloned individual partitions using Casper and told
it to put the contents into any partition that could
accommodate the size of the actual data in the cloned partition.

You have a lot more capability with Acronis in that regard.

Do you know if Macrium Reflect Free handles SSD alignments
correctly for single partition cloning? I've had good experience with
Casper by Future Systems Solutions over the years, but version 7 of
that utility has more bells and whistles than I need, making it too
expensive for just simple cloning.

Yes, as long as you're using the latest version 5.0+.

I want to recommend AOMEI partition assistant. It is absolutely fantastic tool, never find such no-nonsense software tool like this. I'm a real fan, saved me allot of time. Done allot drives with it without any problems and also it can do the SSD alignment for you if you wish. Very easy to use. It is also free to use.

Maybe for you it is a little to late but maybe it can help others.

Not a bad idea to make use of the chance to re-install your windows
completely. It could remove a lot of junk registries and useless
software! :)
