Can anyone recommend the best free antivirus for xp home.
AVG...Avast...Etc.

Both AVG and Avast are excellent. Try them and see which one you like.
I currently am using Avast. I like the interface and more frequent updates.

And others will point out that "free" may not be the way to go. You do not
have all the functionality and security of the full blown PAID program. I
stopped using the free versions in 1996.

Maybe you might want to re-read my post? LOL

You might want to go to the virus newsgroup and see just how many people
there are asking for help, people I might add have one of those "free"
programs on their system.

I have seen many computers with paid up to date antivirus programs that also
contracted a virus. I agree that the paid programs usually are better at
removing a virus once it's identified but they all seem to miss or allow
some viruses to be installed.

I wouldn't get overly confident about any of them. I send an updated
URL listing to customers with on-line scan sites. Currently, am using &
recommending TrendMicro's scan, and Kaspersky (but it takes more
time to run). Microsoft's OneCare Live will probably be a good choice
for average users when it finally becomes available. Along with eTrust
I now am recommending for paid AV, NOD32. AVG is fine for those
who want a free AV solution.

NOD32 is the world leader of the Virus Bulletin 100% Awards having won more
awards (34) than any competing product. Since its first submission for
testing in May 1998, NOD32 was the only tested product that has never missed
a single In the Wild virus.

No such animal. Install both. Keep both updated. But only run one 24/7
if you are into that. Use the second as a double check every now and
then.
