I've had good luck with viewsonics, I ussually buy their better models. The
last monitor I bought was a Hyundia F910 and it seems to be nice. I've
found the monitors that have more adjustments (like individual color
balance etc) seem to have a better image. Higher refresh rates is a good
sign as well.

Okay I've built my first computer. Now I need a better monitor than the one
I've got to go with it. I've read all the reviews that people post on such
sites such as Amazon.com but people usually write those reviews when the
product is new. I'm looking for people's opinions on monitors they've had for
a few years or more to see which ones hold up better. Has the picture quality
held up? Are the colors, brightness, and contrast the same as when you first
bought it? I don't want to spend the money on an LCD monitor so I'm interested
in CRT monitors only.

Thanks

CRTs are like wine if you like it its good. you get what you pay for.
you buy the cheapest in the rack and you get the cheapest. Go look at
a couple of different boxes side by side. You're not buying an
heirloom. There are three or 4 different technologies out there all
with somewhat different characteristics. Lots of reviews and buyers
guides too. My guess is in 5 years CRTs will be like cassette tape
players they still make em but not many.
BTW if you buy a CRT and it fails even during warranty the cost to
ship it both ways may be more than the price of the monitor. Think
hard about buying something local or where the warranty is over the
counter.

I've just bought myself a 19" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930 SB and am really
pleased with the picture quality and the various features. My only gripe is
that it has two feint lines going across the screen which are apparently
supposed to be there. You only really notice them when you're doing anything
that has a white background like word processing. If you're playing a game
you don't see them at all.

Worth a look.

Yep, if I had to have a CRT that's what I'd get, Trinitron-based 19",
though they're still (usually) higher priced than many CRTs, if the OP was
avoiding LCD due to cost that Trinitron might be out of the budget range.
On the other hand sometimes you can find clearance websites offering OEM
Trinitrons at discounted prices... Compaq, probably HP too, used to sell
'em. That incurs the additional expense of shipping though, and not being
able to see the display working before purchase.

Dash it all, its the first time I have seen those two lines for over two
years on my 200GS Trinitron.

I have a 17in LG studioworks 775N, which came with my machine that I bought
2 years ago. It has been nice for this time, but recently I turned the
monitor on and even though its not bad, I have noticed the writing to be
more blurry than usual. It isn't bad though, but the last monitor I had
(NEC 15in) had this problem within 2 years and was much worse!!! My parents
still have that monitor and the only way you can read the writing easily is
to turn the brightness and contrast way down.

There are some pretty cheap LCD displays on eBay, don't know if you had
looked there or not - maybe you could get an LCD screen that doubles as a
TV, then it might be worth spending the extra money.

Sony supplied many companies with the monitors they sold under their own
brand name (as opposed to companies just using Trinitron tubes in them).
One good example is the HP P1100, I used to use one and it was a terrific
monitor worthy of graphics editing.

Some of the HPs were Diamontron(?), Mitsubishi tubed, and were pretty good
too but a notch below the Trinitrons in crispness.
