Are there any free Benchmarking programs that are a standard?

There are plenty of Benchmarking proggies on the 'net when I Google, but I'd
like to avoid ploughing through hundreds of 'em to check 'em out if there is
an "industry standard" one.

I'd also like a decent diagnostic program if someone could recommend a
reputable one. Again I can find a bunch when I Google but I don't have the
know-how and experience to tell the good 'uns.

Thanks.

Oh, and one that will run straight from a CD and doesn't need to install
would be nice...

HDTune comes to mind. It does an excellent job on testing HDD performance,
health, and temperature. It also scans for errors.

Not quite a benchmark but in the same vein is CPU-Z. This is an excellent
little utility for overclocking and taking a peek at unknown CPU's. It also
lists some basic memory information.

Both are "1-File Wonders", and run from a single EXE file.
