Backups would be the only simple method. There's a chance, but not much of
one, that data recovery specialists might be able to recover the file, but
it'd mean shutting down immediately and letting them have at least your hard
disk for a few days. And it'd cost a fair amount of money.
If this file is worth $1,000 or more in terms of information or work time to
recreate, then it may be worthwhile seeking help from specialists. If the
information is worth less or would involve only a few hours of time to
recreate, then your best alternative is just get busy recreating it.
The warning about overwriting files is a REAL warning. The good news is that
now you know the benefit of frequent backups.
