I need more detail. I went to the Sounds tab but I did not see default
beep or a method of turning on or off the items that did appear.

You should see "Default Beep" in the list of sounds. To turn a sound
on, select that sound event in the main list box, click the Sounds
dropdown button, to the left of the Test button, and choose a sound.
To turn a sound off, select that sound event, then select "(None)" at
the top of the Sounds list. I'm using Vista Ulimate here and don't
have my XP laptop handy, but I think the Sounds UI is exactly same in
XP as Vista.

Let's be clear on this (Microsoft ended up using Sound and/or Sounds in
several places which might be confusing). Control Panel has a Sound icon...
double click that to open the Sound dialog box. At the top of the dialog box
is a tab labeled "Sounds"... select it and look in the ListBox for the entry
labeled "Default Beep" and select it. You can now use the Sounds button near
the bottom of the page to select or change the sound assigned to this event.

Rick and Chip,

Thank you for the info.

I did not reply after Chip's message because I did look at the Sounds
dialog box and I still could not find a default beep (plus it was very
LATE at night and I thought I just wasn't functioning at the time.)
And after reading Rick's reply I think I was at the right place and I
still don't see default.

Fortunately my need to make a beep work is not important :)

I may look on another machine I have access to.

Thanks again.
