Beckup could not start message in Scheduled Tasks

I've scheduled backups to run daily with each backup to replace the backup
from the previous week in the folder for that day, i.e., Monday Backup,
Tuesday Backup, etc. My setup procedure appears identical to the Microsoft
instructions for performing backups using the Backup System Tool. I'm running
Windows XP SP2. The backups are to be written to an external Seagate hard
drive. However, the backups are not taking place. The Scheduled Tasks screen
reports status as: could not start. What am I missing in my setup? Thanks.

Are you running the scheduled event at a time when you are not logged
in? If so, did you enable the option (available in Windows XP but not
back in Windows 2000) to run the event whether logged on or not (i.e.,
you have to *disable* the option to run only when logged on which, I
thought, was the default).

Did you define and are you running the event under an admin account? If
not, did you specify an admin account in the RunAs field in the
scheduled event?

Was your computer actually powered up at the time that the scheduled is
event will run? If you powered down then nothing scheduled will run no
matter if it is Task Scheduler or some other schedule in some software
that runs in the background. If you configure your host to go into
Hibernate mode so it is powered down at the time the scheduled event
will run, you will need to enable the option to wake the computer at
that time (waking only works if the host is in a power-saving mode,
which includes Hibernation mode). However, that also means that the
host will unhibernate and may not go back into hibernation mode after
the scheduled event has completed. Depends on how long the backup
takes, hibernation settings, and when you next get back to that host.

I'd like to start with your first comment. There are 3 users on this computer
of which I am the primary one. I'm logged in constantly. I wasn't able to
locate the "enable the option to run the event whether logged in or not" Is
the default/change default contained in the wizard screens for Backup? Thanks.

You said that you scheduled the event. This adds an entry in Scheduled
Tasks; the backup job gets ran by Task Scheduler. That's where you look
at the options for the scheduled event.
