BDD v2 - Unable to restore user state

C

Clive

Hi

Don't know if anyone has BDD v2 experience but I'm running through the
Enterprise edition to do a "Zero Touch" re-deployment of a machine.

I'm a bit stuck on a couple of things which I can't find adequate
information on.

1. AdminDb has a field for UDProfiles is this the <domain>\<username> or
just <username> of the user who you want to migrate the profile of - and
what about multiple user profiles?

2. I'm running the process and my log on
\\<deploymentserver\logs\<computername.log> says User state restore failed,
rc = 1 and then ERROR - Unable to restore user state. I can't find
anything in the migdata share and according to the logs the state was backed
up ok but to C:\MININT\SMSOSD\StateStore
Any ideas?
How can I get it to keep a copy on the server's migdata share as i don't
want to loose the data if there is a minor error.

I also found a log file (last one written) called %OSDCOMPUTERNAME%.prg
(this is obviously supposed to be an environment variable but there is a
bug - how do I fix that).. the conents is below:

2005/02/01
16:56:16,BUILD4VM3_2,Start,LOADSTATE,"C:\MININT\SMSOSD\StateStore"
2005/02/01 16:56:18,BUILD4VM3_2,Begin,-1,TRANSPORT,0,-1

For your questions below:

1. You should include the domain name, e.g. "DOMAIN\UserName". If you have
multiple values, they can be separated by commas in the "UDProfiles" column
(e.g. "DOMAIN\User1,DOMAIN\User2"). Each value will be used to create /USER
parameters that are specified on the USMT scanstate command line. If you
don't specify any values in "UDProfiles", the selection criteria included in
the "UpdateUser.inf" (which by default says to include all users) will
apply.

2a. If you want OSD to always keep the local StateStore directory, you can
create a "C:\MININT\archive_osd.sms" file on the system. When the process
completes (successfully or unsuccessfully) it will leave the entire
C:\MININT directory. In the case of forcing the state store to the network,
in general OSD can do this by changing the OSDSTATEPATH variable. It gets a
little trickier with the BDD ZeroTouchInstallation.vbs script; it might take
a minor modification to make sure that OSDSTATEPATH is always set to UDSHARE
+ UDDIR.

2b. As for the restore failure, you need to review the loadstate log file
to see what failed. (If it were a minor error, USMT would normally continue
on due to the "/c" parameter.) The most likely cause: local user profiles
that USMT wants to restore when the local accounts don't exist. In this
case it may be necessary to add "/lac" or "/lae" to the loadstate arguments
in the CustomSettings.ini file. (See the USMT documentation for more
details on those.)

2c. In some situations, OSD will preserve the OSDLOGS directory (including
the loadstate log) even if there is a failure. Look in %WINDIR%\SMSOSD or
%WINDIR%\TEMP\SMSOSD.

3. The misnamed log file typically relates to the settings in
CustomSettings.ini. There is also a bug in the script that can cause this.
We can explore this one offline if you want - e-mail me at the address
below.

Thanks I'm testing your suggestions out.

I think I have a problem connecting to the AdminDB so the settings in
customsettings.ini are driving it.

For your questions below:

1. You should include the domain name, e.g. "DOMAIN\UserName". If you
have multiple values, they can be separated by commas in the "UDProfiles"
column (e.g. "DOMAIN\User1,DOMAIN\User2"). Each value will be used to
create /USER parameters that are specified on the USMT scanstate command
line. If you don't specify any values in "UDProfiles", the selection
criteria included in the "UpdateUser.inf" (which by default says to
include all users) will apply.

2a. If you want OSD to always keep the local StateStore directory, you
can create a "C:\MININT\archive_osd.sms" file on the system. When the
process completes (successfully or unsuccessfully) it will leave the
entire C:\MININT directory. In the case of forcing the state store to the
network, in general OSD can do this by changing the OSDSTATEPATH variable.
It gets a little trickier with the BDD ZeroTouchInstallation.vbs script;
it might take a minor modification to make sure that OSDSTATEPATH is
always set to UDSHARE + UDDIR.

2b. As for the restore failure, you need to review the loadstate log file
to see what failed. (If it were a minor error, USMT would normally
continue on due to the "/c" parameter.) The most likely cause: local user
profiles that USMT wants to restore when the local accounts don't exist.
In this case it may be necessary to add "/lac" or "/lae" to the loadstate
arguments in the CustomSettings.ini file. (See the USMT documentation for
more details on those.)

2c. In some situations, OSD will preserve the OSDLOGS directory
(including the loadstate log) even if there is a failure. Look in
%WINDIR%\SMSOSD or %WINDIR%\TEMP\SMSOSD.

3. The misnamed log file typically relates to the settings in
CustomSettings.ini. There is also a bug in the script that can cause
this. We can explore this one offline if you want - e-mail me at the
address below.

2. I'm running the process and my log on
\\<deploymentserver\logs\<computername.log> says User state restore
failed, rc = 1 and then ERROR - Unable to restore user state. I can't
find anything in the migdata share and according to the logs the state
was backed up ok but to C:\MININT\SMSOSD\StateStore
Any ideas?
How can I get it to keep a copy on the server's migdata share as i don't
want to loose the data if there is a minor error.

I also found a log file (last one written) called %OSDCOMPUTERNAME%.prg
(this is obviously supposed to be an environment variable but there is a
bug - how do I fix that).. the conents is below:

2005/02/01
16:56:16,BUILD4VM3_2,Start,LOADSTATE,"C:\MININT\SMSOSD\StateStore"
2005/02/01 16:56:18,BUILD4VM3_2,Begin,-1,TRANSPORT,0,-1
2005/02/01 16:57:15,BUILD4VM3_2,End,-1,TRANSPORT,100,-1

2005/02/01 16:57:20,BUILD4VM3_2,End,LOADSTATE,1,0,00:01:05
