have just upgraded my Compaq Armada 1750 laptop from 98 to XP(sp2) and
everything is (mostly) fine except now the power management system has
decided that the battery is not present and so it will not run on battery.
Makes life
difficult when I want to use the laptop on the road!!!
Anybody got a solution to this?

I seem to recall the 1750 is not listed as compatible with XP, when we used
them in work any XP upgrades resulted in various blue screens etc despite
being on latest BIOS and updated drivers.

If memory serves me right Windows 2000 was fine but not XP

Exactly so.

Laptops have much proprietary stuff in them NOT
natively supported by OS's other than the one they came with.

You CAN'T just willy-nilly upgrade them unless the
mgfr. specifically states that it's possible and supplies
the necessary drivers.

Perhaps that is what it lacks. I had a Compaq M300 laptop that ran XP
beautifully. But you will need to visit Compaqs site (actually it's Hewlett
Packards now) and download any necessary drivers for specific model.

Thanks for the comments guys. Everything else on the 1750 is running fine
with XP and (apart from the massive amount of hard drive taken up by xp) I am
happy with it. Just a letdown that it cannot run off batteries. I have
checked for bios and driver updates but nothing available to suit the
problem. So it's either back to 98 or a new laptop it seems - damn!!!
Cheers,
Phil
