I have an HP pavilion ze5400. It's a 2.4 p4, with 512 ram, running XP. It is
a desktop replacement, but I use it for taking notes at school, and church.

This computer sounds like a jet engine. The fans turn on when it gets hot,
and sound really loud. It also only lasts about 1.5 - 2 hours in batter life.

I was wondering if I could run windows in a way that I can save batter life.
If there is some kind of barebones, setting that I have never found that
would be great. Or if you guys could tell me what programs cancel in the back
ground that would be cool to. Or if there is some program out there that,
makes it so the computer works slower, but saves battery life that would be
great to.

Type your model number into the search box. Follow the link. One of the
product FAQs found here outlines how to maximize battery life on this
particular system.

Based on experiences with my portable PCs the following two changes can
make a big different in battery life: If unit is outfitted with wifi,
disable when not using. Lowering screen brightness.

Also you should find "portable/laptop" and "max battery" available in XP's
Power Options. Unless HP supplies there own power options applet and
recommends its use over Windows, you could experiment with those XP
settings.

I can't find anything about power saving, on the HP site and I don't know
what wifi is. You told me to turn it off but I don't know how. I was also
wondering if making it black and white would help, and how to do that.

Wifi= Wireless Networking. If you are not connected via this device to the
network or internet, disable the wireless adapter. Some portable units have
an easy on/off for this device. If yours does not, use Device Manager and
disable the adapter via the properties of the wireless adapter.

Color or black and white - the intensity of the backlight remains the same
so - no, changing to black and white accomplishes nothing. You want to
reduce the brightness of the backlight. The first HP article linked above
shows some special keys provided on HP units that can be pressed to reduce
this.
