Barcode fonts in Word 2003

Was hoping for a simple solution, such as loading free fonts from the web,
instead of buying barcoding software. I have tried several, but none of them
can be read by any of my barcode readers. The readers read any existing
barcode I put before them, but not the ones I create in Word.

I want to produce Code 39 on Avery labels to apply to objects and locations
for tracking purposes.

I have turned off the auto format feature in Word Tools that would corrupt
the codes as instructed by the free font providers.

Suggestions on either fixing the problem or locating freeware would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Freeware, shareware, and lots of information are at the Barcode1 site,
http://www.adams1.com/pub/russadam/share.html.

I haven't done any experiments myself -- don't have a reader -- but I
understand that barcode fonts often are unrecognizable. The better approach
seems to be a separate application that prepares the barcode as a graphic,
which can then be included in the Word document as a picture.
