bar code like lines suddenly appeared on desktop, system tray icons, even at
top of outlook express. XP up to date, have not changed anything during this
time

Reboot the machine. If the lines are still there, do a System Restore to a
point before the lines appeared. Still there? You may have video hardware
trouble. Check the video cable connections from the computer to the monitor.
Attach the monitor to a different computer to test the monitor. Swap the
video adapter card for a known working one. If onboard video, add a known
working card and disable the onboard video in the BIOS. No joy? What is the
malware status of the computer? Still bad?--- Drive a stake through the hard
drive.
