Badly damaged FP Site

I have used FP since FP1997. I build sites for my
business, and update them infrequently.

I purchased FP2002 to update a site created on FP2000.
After publishing the site once, I put it away, and
recently wanted to update some phone numbers on the home
page. As I loaded index.htm, the page loaded the borders
several times. I looked at the HTML, and several BODY
statements had be added to the code. I also have an Web
Bot in the left sharded border. The code for this seems
to be repeated as well, but not the same.

The right shared border had the MSNBC weather Web
Component, and suddenly there is HTML in the border for a
static version of this banner with set temps and wind
speeds (not the Seattle placeholder version). The second
banner did not show in the Normal view, but would show in
the Preview and Browser.

Calling MS support was a waste of time, and money. (take
two asprin and call in the morning).

I have been trying to sort this thing out for two
straight days (neglecting my lucrative real estate
business). After building a new top border, and modifying
the colors and fonts of my .css, index.htm looked great
in Normal mode. In Preview mode, the top and left border
only displayed once, but the content table, and right
border were displayed under the left border, and the
bottom border was to the right of the right border.

I'm thinkin' that the whole site is hosed and that I will
have to rebuild it from scratch to get my new phone
number on the site.

I would be very grateful for some advise on how to repair
the site, or I'll rebuild it in someone else's product.

This is a bug in the FP2002 client and 2002 Server Extensions. Your host
must install the latest update and you need to install the latest Office
Update. Once this has been done, you then need to publish a fresh copy to
the server.

Windows Host:

Thomas,
How do I fix the copy on my disk? I have already
down/loaded the updates and nothing has changcd. I tryed
several options for creating a new web after the office
updates were installed, but nothing I tried made a
difference. Will repairing the server fix a local copy?

If you are using Theme/Shared Borders or just Shared Border on your web,
then the following might help...

First make sure you can see the _borders folder, if not then go to Tools |
Web Settings | Advanced and enable viewing of hidden directories.

Next open each shared border or include page, delete any shared border
content from the page in Normal View, then switch to HTML view, in the head
section make sure the reference for "Microsoft Border" is written as
follows:

<meta name="Microsoft Border" content="none">

Then save the page while in HTML View.

Thomas,

Does that mean that I have to throw out all my shared
borders? My entire site uses them for nearly sitewide
top, left, right (broken), and bottom content.

I also use the Scheduled Banner feature (left border) and
the MSNBC weather component(on broken right border). I
have seen some posts where these may create problems.

Is is better just to go back to FP2000 for my site?

Thanks for your help,
JScott

Thomas,

Perhaps my tone was a bit too harsh in my last reply, and
I did not realize that you are an independent.

My site is www.jscottcarpenter.com, and I am desparate to
salvage what's there so I can just remodel and not
rebuild.

Your previous post said to delete the contents of the
_borders|top.htm/left.htm/right.htm/bottom.htm files. I
did this last night, and when I rebuilt them, everything
looked great for a time. After everthing was looking
good in both the Normal and Browser previews, I closed
FP2003, then reopened index.htm and looked at the Browser
Preview. The Left and Top borders were repeated again!

Am I better off going back to FP2000. Has anyone tried
this??

JScott,

You did not read my instructions correctly, the solution was really just to
change one line of code that appeared in the head section of your shared
border pages, not rebuild them as that would not solve the problem.

JScott,

Going back to the FP2000 client application will not solve the problem. The
problem is the FP2002 extensions on the host, and they need to be updated by
the host as indicated in the MS KB article.
