bad restore point?

Hi all, i was wondering how to come back from a bad restore point in WIN XP
Pro/ After the POST screen has appeared and the WIN XP Logo w/ bar @ the
bottom appears & goes off I'm left with.... we apol for the
inconvienence.... w choices of safe mode & SMode w command etc. I've tried
all of these incl last known good & under advanced options (F8 key @ boot)
all to no avail., all I get is a blank screen w/ either safe mode in the 4
corners or just a blank screen but both with a moveable cursor but no keybrd
inputs and no desktop or command promts. Ive also tried to boot from the XP
Pro CD by changing boot sequence in BIOS but that doesnt work either, it
doesnt recognize that ther's a CD in there. I cant even get a command promt
under either mode or booting from a DOS startup disk. I ve made & tried the
XP Boot disk & it tells me that its a invalid file & remove & press any key.
Ive seen a few threads about this but none that show step by step for
a newbie. Id like to keep the important files I have without a total reformat
as the system does recognize that ther is a Hdisk there, it just seems to
skip the proper files. ANY HELP WOULD BE VASTLY APPRECIATED!!! Dedala

Have you tried starting System Restore from Safe mode with Command Prompt? At
the prompt type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe then press Enter.

So what happens when you type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe at the
command prompt and press Enter?
