bad recording software?

After an hour on the phone wth the tech one day, and another hour the next day, all they could come up as the reason for my "sound recorder" not working - i.e., flat green line stays flat - was that the software must be bad, and as the 90 days of warranty are just over, I'm on my own. The mic is fine, plugged into the right jack, we've turned up all the volume controls, even checked the video diagnostics. Any suggestions? I really would appreciate it if someone could help me get this going.

He probably covered this, but if you double click your volume control and
go to Options, then Properties, you need to check the "recording" button,
OK it, and then you'll have your controls for recording. Is
"microphone" selected and the volume turned up?

Did you verify your microphone with Sound Recorder, the built-in app that
comes with Windows? If it doesn't work there also, you have a bad mike or a
bad sound card.

here is one a million possibilities, the settings are not
right in the system or the software.

we record calls to our center and sometimes i have to
play with the settings and the physical connections till
it will work.
