Have XP Home Edition pre-installed on laptop thus no
installation CD. Found Microsoft Knowledge Base article
on Bad Image Checksum when upgrading to XP but none on
pre-installed XP. Have a bad feeling I'm going to have to
use the Restore CD but there is a Word File on the hard
drive I can't lose if I can help it. Lot of re-work.
Appreciate advice.

Although article 326687 references an upgrade install, the information there
may still be relevant - for instance, one common cause of your error is bad
memory. Have you tried changing your memory configuration as suggested?
