I am so frustrated at the whole customer support fiasco.
Bought copy 1 of XP Professional upgrade for install on a
new HP 854n computer with XP Home. "CD Key not
accepted". I've done upper case, lower case, caps lock
off, caps lock on.

Exchanged it for Copy 2 of XP professional upgrade.
CD key not accepted on this one as well.

MS Customer support is a joke. - It's a 26 mile marathon.
I've jumped through more hoops than a poodle at the
circus. If Mr. Gates had any decency, he would take
some of that 3 billion increase in his net worth in 2003
and turn his customer service organization into something
noticably better!!

I'm tired of hearing the phone recording, "Your call is
very important to us". That's a bunch of baloney.

I'm tired of going in circles to nowhere on the internet
in the MS support zone.

I'm tired of trying to navigate MS Passport security
gates with product ID's that I can't even see because it
won't let me install the friggin product.

This is the kind of corporate behavior which creates
regulation and class action garbage which I can't stand.
But can lack of customer service from Microsoft on new
product purchases get much worse ? Maybe I'm the
exception, but I don't think so.

If anyone out there has a magic answer to my problem,
please let me know so I can avoid another 2 hours of
wasted effort tomorrow.

I would recommend you make this the problem of the vendor from whom you
are purchasing XP. They have sold you something that doesn't work; or
if it is something you are doing wrong, then let them assist you in
figuring how to resolve this.

It comes to mind that maybe the vendor is selling you counterfeit
copies? Perhaps I'm being too much of a cynic...

Also ... you probably did this, but watch that you can see differences
between the letters 1 and L, O and D, Q and O, 0 and O, etc.

Mike, whatever the cause of your key # problem turns out
to be, I agree that there is no Hell imaginable that would
be worse than MS customer support. CS is obviously the
absolute last priority with that company. In fact, it is
hard to believe that it could be that bad by accident,
rather than by design. There is a small percentage of
relly heroic, talented individuals in the front ranks, but
they must gravitate up and out eventually.

While I was on the phone with MSN last night at this time,
it occured to me: their customer support is so bad, it's
WEIRD.

That is a laptop right? Do you have the Fn key enabled? Not that it wouldn't
be noticeable. Make sure you are not confusing letters for numbers, etc.

Greetings --

You need to examine the Product Key very carefully. It's awfully
easy to mistake a "B" for an "8," a "G" for a "6," an "S" for a "5,"
or a "Q" for a "0" or "O." Fortunately, Microsoft had the good sense
to leave the "1's," "I's," "O's," and "0's" out of the equation.
Also, be sure that your CapsLock if _off_ while entering the Product
Key.
