Bad blocks on Harddrive

Hello all,

We have a Dell D420 notebook which have bad blocks shown in the event
viewer, sometimes the machine crash as well. We have now replaced the
HD in that notebook.

My question when I format the HD with bad blocks, do they get mark and
won't be used anymore? Should I better request with Dell a replacement
drive?

I'm not sure a HD with bad blocks does qualify for a replacement.

What do you think, how I should progress?

Thank you
Edy

Your disk is dying. Backup your files and prepare to replace it,
warrantee or no.

Go to Dell's web site and look up your machine by it's service
tag. That will tell you what your warantee is.

You can buy a disk that's probably larger and faster for $100-$150.

If you notebook is crashing then the drive is bad and should be replaced,
check your warrantee to see if it's covered by Dell.
If they send you a new drive and ask for the old/defective one back then you
should make a backup copy of all your personal files and then delete them
from the drive (using a secure erasing utility) before you return it.

A full format should, a quick format won't

Yes, it's way better than reusing a faulty drive.
I'm not sure a HD with bad blocks does qualify for a replacement.

It does if you insist (and it's under warrenty). I remember being told
by a dell phone tech "it has bad sectors, just reformat it". Gah, As i
was acting on behalf of a customer, i had to tell him no, because if it
went bad again, it would reflect badly on my reputation as a
technician. That actually worked to get a replacement shipped. I still
had to do the song and dance about running the dell diagnostics on the
phone, which i had previously run in order to diagnose the problem to
begin with.

Okay, thank you for the information.

I try to get a replacement with Dell.
