backups

I purchased my system with Windows xp pre-loaded on it before purchase, and
consequently, I wondered what I woud do if my hard drive crashed. Id have all
the hardware but no way of getting my system files on to a new hard drive. My
anti-virus programme (Bullguard) provides a back-up service, so I phoned them
to ask what to back up to recover from the above scenario, and that they
replied that they couldn't back up windows xp. I Dont believe this. I was not
supplied with a windows xp disc on purchase. Microsoft have never questioned
the legality of my system (and they surely check when you connect up to the
net), so why Am I not allowed to create a back-up of a system which I have
purchased?
Alternatively, could I transfer the system on to a cd myself. If so.
what files do I need to copy. Thanks 4 any help. Don

Your vendor must provide you with some method of restoring your computer to
its factory-gate settings to be in compliance with the OEM Builders
Licence. There will be some documentation on how to do that with the
documents that came with your computer. Failing that, get in touch with
your vendor.

Hi:

Basically, you should have a copy of your data files, like photos, word
docs, excel files, etc, all your personal data. Then, the manufacturer of
the computer should have provided you with a stick on the machine called
COA, with a key of 25 digits. Also you should have a CD media with the
operating system ready to be installed in case of a problem.

Gordon and Juan, dunno if I'm supposed t reply like this. Thanks for the
info, I'll dig out all the stuff, but I'm sure I didn't have a disk. Supplier
went out of business 12 months after I bought it. There is a sticker on the
case with the oem number on it. Didn't understand the linux email info.
Thanks both of you. Don

You may want to investigate/invest (in) imaging software.
These would save every thing on your HDD or partitions, including your
applications and your own files.
I'm quite pleased with Acronis Trueimage.
Others may prefer Ghost.

Hth. Larbowlin. Yeah, I remember someone behind the counter in a computer
shop talking about ghost, must be 5 or 6 years ago. Don't remember what the
problem was then! I reckon yours is the easiest solution if I can't lcate a
disc. I'll give trueimage a try, on your recommendation. thanks.
