This may have been covered before. I have not seen it.

Is there a way to backup the update downloads? I have a couple glitches on
C:\drive and would like to format and reinstall XP Home again. I have did
this before but downloading and reinstalling all of the critical updates is
a real pain. (You know where) I do have xp service pack on disk but the
hours of downloading the other updates discourage me in trying to fix my
other problems. Seems like with all of the brains at Microsoft, there would
be a way to backup the updates or at least offer to sell us a disk like
service pack 2. I think I saw something about service pack 2 coming out in
a year or so. Wow Any ideas??? Thanks in advance.

No, you can not backup the installed updates! However, you can download the
update manually and store them locally (hard drive or CD). As for Service
Pack 1, download the "network" install version.

You can't backup installed updates but, is reformatting really necessary?
You don't say what your reason is, perhaps it can be fixed without such a
radical move.
