backup to external usb hard drive

Think you can use PowerQuest or Ghost to make complete backup of a hard
drive to an external, usb connected hard drive.

Question: How do you restore the backup from the external, usb hard drive
to a new hard drive in case of a hard drive crash and replacement?

I thought that the usb port is supported by the operating system. So if the
replacement drive has nothing on it, how do you reach the external, usb hard
drive to restore files including the operating system and its registry?

Is there an external driver for the usb port that can be loaded from a
"rescue" diskette like that used to reach the cd drive?

Thanks

If you use Ghost, it has to recognize the USB drive to write the image there
in the first place. Ghost is a DOS program. DOS does not have USB support
built in. Luckily, many newer machines' BIOS includes support (usually called
something like "legacy USB support") for USB hard drives, so if you boot it
into DOS (from the boot floppy that Ghost can create, for example), it will be
able to see the USB drive. If the drive is formatted as FAT16, DOS 6.x can
see it. If it is FAT32, you need the DOS from Win98 or WinME (which is also
what WinXP puts on a floppy if you select "make bootable" when you format the
floppy).
If your machine is old enough that it does not include USB support in the
BIOS, there are DOS drivers that can be put on the floppy that will allow DOS
to see the drive. I have downloaded one in the past called DUSE that works.
