Backup to a network share

I am trying to setup vista (enterprise) to run it's backups to a network
share.

When I point to "on a network" and tell it \\server\sharename, vista
asks me for the userid/password of my account on that server. After I
authenticate, I get a popup window which states:

"The network share could not be accessed for the following reasons:
Could not create a file when that file already exists (0x800700B7)
Please ensure that the network location is valid"

Note that I can map a network drive to that share just fine (and
manipulate the files on it).

Have you tried pointing the backup to the mapped drive instead of the
logical drive? I don't use Vista's backup app (I prefer to have greater
control over what I include in the backup) so that may not be possible.

I have the exact same problem with Vista Home Premium trying to use a NAS
server.

and what would that problem be? Without mentioning the problem people
can only guess.

Thanks a lot.

Unfortunately, I can not see the samba version used (Intel SS4000E server)
but the tread you mentioned helps me know what to look for.
